Superannuation

Australia's compulsory retirement savings system. Employers pay a share of wages (12% from July 2025) into a fund that invests for members until retirement.

Super funds invest members' balances across Australian and overseas shares, bonds, property, infrastructure and cash, according to the option chosen. Earnings are taxed at 15% in the accumulation phase, and capital gains on assets held more than 12 months at 10%.

Most members are in a default balanced or growth option, which typically holds 60–80% in growth assets such as shares.

Why it matters

Super funds are among the largest investors on the ASX and in global markets, so their flows matter for prices. For most Australians, super is their largest investment after their home, and its returns depend heavily on the share markets FinVolio tracks.
