Last reading6.8%August 2026

Annual growth was 6.8% in August after 7.0% in July, but month-on-month spending was flat (0.0%) in August, which points to some easing. Inflation of 4.0% and fuel prices up 13.5% support high nominal growth, so I expect a modest pullback to about 6.4% rather than a sharp drop.

What it measures

The change over 12 months in household spending from the ABS Household Spending Indicator, which replaced the Retail Trade survey in 2025. Not adjusted for inflation.

Why it matters

The most timely monthly read on Australian consumers, who drive about half the economy.
