The goods surplus has trended down from about A$4-5bn in 2024 to roughly A$0-2bn in recent months (Jun-Aug 2026: 1962, 1351, 495), with large swings including -2117 in March and -2819 in May. Fuel prices up 13.5% year on year point to a higher import bill, so I expect a small surplus near the statistical baseline of about 1000, with a wide range given the monthly volatility.

What it measures

Exports minus imports of goods each month, seasonally adjusted (services are not included).

Why it matters

Swings with iron ore, coal and gas prices; the surplus has supported the Australian dollar and the budget.
