Last reading6.2%June quarter 2026

Import price inflation jumped to 6.2% in the 2026-04 quarter from -0.3%, and fuel prices are up 13.5% year on year, which keeps pressure on import costs. A jump this large usually partly reverses and base effects from the 2025 readings (2.3 to 3.0) offer little drag, so I expect a modest fade to about 5% rather than the baseline's 6.9.

What it measures

The change over 12 months in the prices Australian importers pay, in Australian dollars.

Why it matters

A falling Australian dollar or rising world prices reach the shelves through imports, with a lag.
