What it measures

The value of the US dollar against a broad basket of trading partners' currencies, weighted by trade. Similar in spirit to the DXY, which uses six currencies.

Why it matters

A strong US dollar usually means a weaker Australian dollar and tighter conditions for emerging markets and commodities.
